Every Once In A While:
this young man likes to play hide and seek within
the minds of his loved ones. This song was
written in memory of a son and brother who is also a
father of two beautiful boys. He was and is a
special young man whose family feels his presence
each and every day of their lives.
This song was inspired by the family’s ability to
acknowledge the symbols and signs that he would send
them on a regular basis after his passing. One of
his signature symbols was a shiny penny. His family
told me many different stories of
how he would leave Shiny Pennies for them to
find at the most appropriate times and not always
where you would expect… and… sometimes in the most
inappropriate places. Let’s just say he has a great
sense of humor. Of the many symbols this man would
use, the one that stood out the most for this family
was the Hummingbird. I was told of how he once
caught a hummingbird with his bare hands that
happened to be trapped in their garage. That alone
is an amazing story. Who could possibly catch
a bird with their bare hands? Let alone a
Hummingbird.. Well, what better sign for this man to
use to let his family know when he’s around. Out of
many encounters with the hummingbird, this one story
his mother spoke of really struck me as being quite
special. Due to the nature of her son’s tragic
passing, the media became very interested in his
story. Reporters would flock to her home hoping to
get some kind of information regarding his death.
One day while talking with a lady reporter, A
HUMMINGBIRD appeared out of nowhere and kept
FLYING ROUND AND ROUND AND ROUND this women’s
head. Needless to say, Brian’s family found this
very inspiring and to this day still laugh when they
think back to how the Humming Bird zeroed in on that
reporter. So much so, she was swatting at it as if
it were a bee. When I was writing this song, I
remember feeling, “here is a man who really wants
his family to know when he is around”. His loved
ones learned early on that whenever they see, hear
or even smell anything that reminds them of their
son, that it was actually him giving them a sign. A
sign that he will always be in their hearts and that
their connection will never be broken.
A gift from their grandparents, may Brian’s little
boys grow up knowing this song was created and
inspired by their Daddy.
